Expatrié à New-York et fondateur du Barbès Café à Brooklyn, le français Olivier Conan et son équipe cosmopolite ressuscitent avec maestria la Chicha, cette cumbia péruvienne mâtinée de pop psychédélique qui sévissait dans les juke-boxes des seventies à Lima. Frétillante et dansante, cette musique andine y connaît une seconde jeunesse, baignée de rythmes afro-latins, de guitares surfabilly, d’accents Bollywoodiens ou de western et soutenus par des claviers et une tonalité résolument vintage. Chicha Libre révèle une nouvelle déclinaison, tropicale et hybride, de la cumbia, cette vague sonore qui ne cesse de ravager les dance-floors Sud-Américains.
Together with his cosmopolitan team, the Frenchman Olivier Conan, who is living in New York as an expat and is also the founder of the Barbès Café in Brooklyn, brings back to life the Chicha with consummate skill: a Peruvian Cumbia spiced up with psychedelic pop which was huge in the 70s in Lima. He reinvents the buzzing dancing Peruvian music a second youth by dropping in Afro-latin sounds, surfabilly guitars and keyboards, and by infusing it with Bollywood and Western sounds, thus giving it a definite vintage feel. Chicha Libre creates a brand new hybrid version of the Cumbia, a music which is still all the rage on South-American dancefloors.
