Gargar's all-female quartet's high-pitched voices and incantatory melodies have infused new passion into Kenya's North-Eastern musical tradition. The vocal ensemble saw the light within the female community Bismillahi Gargar which dedicates itself to safeguarding oral traditions in the County of Garissa. Mixing modern instruments to their voices, they have revealed whole aspects of largely hidden Somali culture to the public. The Somalis are a people scattered around the horn of Africa. These old songs have taken on a new brilliance whilst preserving their authenticity: they keep their original roughness but still manage to hypnotise us.

GARGAR
Avec ses hautes voix timbrées et ses mélodies incantatoires, le quartette féminin de Gargar ravive avec passion les traditions musicales de la région nord-orientale du Kenya. Accompagné par des instruments modernes, cet ensemble vocal, issu de la communauté de femmes Bismillahi Gargar dédié à la sauvegarde de la culture orale du Comté de Garissa, met à jour des pans entiers du patrimoine des Somalis, ces populations essaimées dans la Corne de l’Afrique. Ces chants ancestraux prennent un nouvel éclat tout en conservant leur authenticité, entre vertu hypnotique et rugosité originelle…
