Nishtiman's musical journey is a historic moment which is both moving and ground-breaking and which goes far beyond frontiers and conflicts. With Hussein Zahawy as their leader, this group of musicians called Nishtiman is writing a new chapter in the history of music from Kurdistan, a region which straddles Iran, Iraq and Turkey. They give an unprecedented modern rendition of Kurdish music. They have taken a style of music which has its roots in centuries of tradition and woven a new musical path for the people of the troubled Middle East. Tambur, kamanché or duduk create brilliant sounds that can soar heavenwards with joy or be hauntingly plaintive with sorrow.
